软件学院是山西省政府、山西省教育厅批准的省级示范性软件学院之一(年成立)，属于中北大学的二级学院，是山西省首个实质性开展本科招生的示范性软件学院。学院设有一个本科专业——[软件工程专业]，下设六个专业方向。同时学院拥有软件工程一级学科硕士点，下设三个学科方向。

培养模式
“2+1+1”：其中“2”是指进入学院的前两个学年，学习软件工程专业的公共基础课和专业基础课（学科核心课），两个“1”分别指第三学年分方向深度学习专业课程，第四学年在实习实训基地及软件企业进行工程实践（毕业实习和毕业设计）。
The“2+1+1”:“2”referstothegeneralbasiccoursesandprofessionalbasiccourses(corecourses)ofsoftwareengineeringmajorinthefirsttwoacademicyearsafterenteringtheSchool,andthe"1+1”referstothein-depthstudyofprofessionalcoursesindifferentprofessionalemphasisinthethirdacademicyear,andtheengineeringpracticeintheinternshipandtrainingbasesandsoftwareenterprisesinthefourthacademicyear(graduationpracticeandgraduationdesign).
